It is common knowledge that smoking can cause cancer and increase the risk of cardiac diseases. Despite all medical information and warning about the perils of smoking, the sad fact remains that approximately 23 million women in the US smoke cigarettes. Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in this country, yet more than 140,000 women die each year from health problems caused by smoking. The highest incidence of smoking occurs among women between twenty-five and forty-four. Women smokers face all the health hazards of smoking that men do such as increased of risk of respiratory diseases and all types of cancer - lung, mouth, larynx, pharynx, pancreas, kidney, and bladder.

Women smokers who are in the habit of using oral contraceptives risk increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as blood clots, heart attacks, and paralytic strokes. This risk increases with age and women over 35 years should either completely quit smoking and/or cease using oral contraceptives. Medical reports confirm that pill users suffer from a mild elevation in blood pressure. However, blood pressure often returned to normal levels once oral contraceptives are discontinued. Nonetheless all women using oral contraceptives are advised to have their blood pressure checked at least three to four times a year.

Poisonous substances in tobacco are transmitted from pregnant mothers through the blood stream to the fetus. These toxic chemicals present serious risks to both the unborn child, as well as the mother. Smoking during pregnancy is associated with premature delivery, low birth weight of the baby, early rupture of membranes, miscarriage, and even neonatal death. New born babies, whose mothers smoked during pregnancy, have the same nicotine levels in their bloodstream as adults who smoke, and they undergo withdrawal medical symptoms during their first days of life.

Children born to mothers who smoke experience more often common cold, ear aches, respiratory problems, and other illnesses requiring regular visits to the pediatrician than children born to nonsmokers. Defying medical advice, many women continue to smoke during pregnancy, knowing fully the hazards to both the smoker and the fetus. Medical reports estimate that between 12 -20% of pregnant women smoke cigarettes. The carbon monoxide from tobacco use can reduce the amount of oxygen for the developing fetus and nicotine can reduce blood flow to the uterus. Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to experience life-threatening complications of pregnancy.

Curiously, many present day women delay childbirth until they are in their thirties or even early forties. This can cause fertility problems even for nonsmoking women. But women who smoke and delay childbirth are putting themselves at a substantially higher risk of future infertility than nonsmokers. Studies reveal that chemicals in tobacco may alter the cervical fluid, making it toxic to sperm causing pregnancy to be difficult to achieve. Some of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes may result in gene mutations that can cause miscarriage, birth defects, cancer, and other health problems in the children of smoking mothers.

The chances of pelvic inflammatory diseases are 33 percent higher in women who smoke than non-smokers. This is an extremely painful disease that requires immediate medical intervention. It is also a contributing factor for miscarriages as well as pelvic adhesions and other fertility problems. If a girl begins to smoke as a teenager, then she is susceptible to an early menopause. Women smokers begin to experience menopause symptoms two to three years earlier than nonsmokers. Menstrual problems such as scanty, arrested and painful bleeding during periods and vaginal discharges are common complaints among women who smoke.

As we grow older, we may notice some skin aging problems such as fine lines, wrinkles and sagging that will make us look older. We cannot do anything to change or stop the ageing process as far as our skin is concerned. Younger looking skin is not only the dream of women but is also the same for men. The best way of maintaining a youthful look is by leading a healthy lifestyle than the products you choose. Younger looking skin is not very far away if you follow certain tips.

Regular cleansing and moisturizing can do wonders as grow older. Gentle cleansing is very important. Cleansing is essential in maintaining the healthy look of your skin. A good lightweight moisturizer must be applied after cleansing your skin. For the maximum effects of the creams, use a combination of sunscreen, anti-oxidant creams and anti-ageing creams. Exfoliate your skin weekly. Exfoliating is good for your skin, but it must be done gently. This is necessary to remove dead skin cells in order to give you radiance. After you exfoliate, hydrate your skin with good moisturizer. The general and the most accurate steps for maintaining the look of your skin are cleansing, toning, moisturizing and conditioning. Conditioning can be done using home-made or parlor facials.

The signs of ageing, such as liver spots, wrinkles and broken blood vessels are caused by ultraviolet rays of the sun. Hence, it is essential to avoid the exposure to direct sun during the hottest part of the day. Use a sunscreen lotion or cream when you go out.

Proper diet is also useful to maintain young skin. Vitamins A, C, D and E, magnesium and potassium have anti-oxidant properties and help in maintaining the health of your skin and delaying the aging process. Fruit such as papaya, mango and apple, and vegetables such as white cabbage contain natural anti-oxidants that help to fight free radicals that damage cells and maintain young skin. Eat lot of fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind to drink enough water and fresh juices. Drinking lot of water will flush out the toxins from your body.

Regular exercise will keep your body fit and will help in maintaining a young skin. Doing breathing exercises and relaxing will relieve you from chronic stress that produce hormones which damage your skin. Smoking is not only injurious to health but it also causes wrinkles and makes you look older soon. So, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

Once wrinkles have appeared on your skin, recognize the type of wrinkles you have. Superficial wrinkles known as dynamic wrinkles can be erased with anti-ageing creams. But static wrinkles do not respond to anti-ageing creams but responds only to botox and collagen implants.

Proper and professional massage and acupressure may help to firm and invigorate your skin. A series of laser treatments are available for removing wrinkles. There are multiple anti-ageing creams available in the market. Collagen and retinol creams may also help you to get rid of age-lines and wrinkles. Injecting collagen will help replace destroyed collagen, tighten the skin and disappear the wrinkles. Using collagen supplements can help you to maintain healthy, wrinkle-free skin. Always make sure that you buy only branded and quality cosmetic products for your skin.

Try to relax yourself from all your worries and be happy in order to have youngest-looking skin for years.

Hair loss is one of the major problems for men, women and children. Persons suffering from severe hair loss may even lose their self-confidence. Losing hair can be stressful for everyone, especially for teenagers. Hair loss can occur due to several causes.

Hair loss can occur due to certain diseases such as anemia, lupus, diabetes, thyroid disease, eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, etc. Certain infections of the scalp such as fungal and bacterial infections can cause hair loss. Skin disease such as Alopecia areata, and psychological disorder such as Trichotillomania also causes hair loss on the scalp. You may suddenly lose a large amount of hair for about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery. Hair loss can be hereditary as genes can be a cause of hair loss for you. Physical stress due to surgery, illness, anemia, high level of work and rapid weight change, and emotional stress due to mental illness, family related worries and other reasons can contribute to hair loss. But the hair loss related to the stress is temporary.

Hormonal problems can also cause hair loss. Hair loss will be much if male or female hormones are out of balance. Male-pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Women who suffer from female-pattern baldness, the hair usually become thin over the entire scalp. Your hair may fall out if your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, birth control pills and menopause can be the major cause of hair loss in women. Most of the women notice hair loss for about 3 months after they give birth to a child. This is also due to hormonal imbalance.

Intake of certain some medicines such as anticoagulant medicines, acne medicines, gout medicines, chemotherapy medicines used to treat cancer, diet pills, blood pressure medicines, birth control pills, antidepressants, steroids like testosterone, and over dosage of some vitamins, can cause hair loss. Chemotherapy medicines not only destroy cancer cells but also destroy cells in charge for normal growth of hair and nails.

Improper care of your hair can cause hair loss. Using tight hair rollers and hair bands can cause hair loss. Wearing pigtails or cornrows causes hair loss. Improper or regular chemical treatments and hot oil treatments of hair such as getting your such as hair coloring, bleaching, straightening, or curling can damage or break your hair and may cause falling of hair. This can also result in severe hair loss. Traction alopecia, which is the result of tension on the scalp due to wearing hair pulled so tightly, can damage the hair follicles. Destruction of hair follicles causes permanent hair loss. Transitory damage to the hair follicles causes temporary hair loss.

Poor eating results in poor nutrition to the body. Poor nutrition can invite hair loss since your body doesn’t get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to sustain hair growth.

Losing about 50 to 100 hairs per day is normal. But if you are losing more than the normal level, then you must be aware that something may be wrong. Recognizing the real cause for hair loss can help you to find the proper treatment for your hair loss. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause of your hair fall at the earliest so that the disease can be diagnosed before becoming worse.

Life is becoming increasingly fast-paced and more and more people are suffering from Depression syndrome. Depression, simply stated, is a common mental disorder born of repeated failures in one’s attempts, loss of interest in daily activities, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, inadequate sleep, low energy levels and feelings of discontent. If this problem persists for prolonged periods, it may affect an individual’s ability to cope with normal life. When symptoms become severe, the victim may develop suicidal tendencies. However, most cases of depression can be treated with drugs, counseling or psychotherapy.

Some of the common symptoms of Depression are a disinterested and melancholic look, feelings of despair, a sense of guilt and poor self-esteem and lack of interest in things which the patient once enjoyed doing. A variety of treatments including medications and short-term psychotherapies have proven effective in dealing with depression. As stated earlier, Depression has no single cause and quite often, it results from a combination of several factors.

Depression may not only a mental ailment but also related to physical changes in the brain, and connected to an imbalance of a type of chemical that carries signals in your brain and nerves called neurotransmitters. There are also other causes for Depression such as family history as genetics play an important part in depression.

Factors like financial problems, the breakup of a relationship, or the death of a loved one can cause Depression. People who have low self-esteem and a negative attitude to life in general are at higher risk of becoming depressed. Serious medical conditions like heart disease, cancer and other terminal diseases, and positive HIV can contribute to depression, partly because of the physical weakness and the fear of imminent death.

Depression in such patients can make medical conditions worse, since it weakens the immune system. In some extreme cases, depression can be caused by medications used to treat long-term diseases. Several psychological factors like continued anxiety, loss of appetite, schizophrenia, and physical abuse can cause depression.

Young people, particularly adolescents go through many different feelings and moods as they keep growing up and parents are often unsure about whether their behavior is normal or whether they need counseling. Young people can feel depressed for all trivial reasons and their feelings of depression can vary. Although it is often difficult to communicate with young people who feel very low and refuse to get into a conversation. But it is important that you respect your child’s feelings and offer to listen and lend support. Knowing that friends and family really care and are willing to give support can be the first vital step to help them overcome Depression.

Dysthymia is a sort of mild depression that can last for many months in young people. A person with dysthymia may have less energy and find it difficult to concentrate, have trouble with eating and sleeping, feel diffident and timid and lose all interest in daily life. Dysthymia is more serious than just a depressed mood alone, and professional assessment and help may be very useful.

Major depression is, however a serious malady in which a person has a severely depressed mood and totally loses interest in life and quite often entertaining suicidal thoughts. It may be triggered by a major stressful event such as a death or a broken relationship or failure in examinations or continued unemployment.

Anger is an emotion that can have damaging effects if it is not properly managed. Anger is very dangerous to your health. It increases your adrenaline and blood pressure levels. Deadly consequences may occur when people could not control their anger and rage. Anger can even break relationships. Moreover, anger can also result in hurting someone or doing something that you may feel sorry later on.

Some people find it easy to control their anger. More people are in need to develop anger management skills. Here are some excellent anger management tips: Try to get away from the person or the situation responsible for your anger. Excuse yourself and walk away if you are in the middle of an argument which is boosting your anger. Walking away from the situation is a good option to control anger.

Relax yourself when you feel angry. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes and visualize yourself in a calm place which makes you feel happy. You may also visualize a relaxing lovable experience. Drink a glass of water, and listen to some relaxing and soothing music. Listening to such music will calm yourself and reduce your anger. Take deep breaths frequently when you listen to music. Good music will help you a lot when you are under stress.

Go for a walk or do some physical exercise when you cannot control your anger. Exercising increases your endorphins. Your angry mood may switch to a calm mood if you do an exercise that you enjoy most. You can also engage in some other physical activities that can relax yourself and reduce your anger. Try to play some relaxing games like computer games or some other indoor games.

Share your inner feelings with your friends, relatives or someone whom you trust most. You may feel relieved when you pour out your inner feelings. This is also good for your health. You will also find yourself communicating in a different mood with your trusted ones. This may also reduce your anger and relieve your unpleasant and painful feelings.

Pray God. Prayers bring inner peace to your soul and will guide you to control your anger and displeasure.Judge whether your thoughts, hopes, and feelings responsible for your anger is right. Also do the same by imagining yourself as the opponent. Now, you may find it easy to relax and control your anger if your opponent is also right. Try to forgive the person who is responsible for your anger and forget the unpleasant memories which are responsible for your anger.

Start counting from 1 to 100 when your anger is at its peak. This will reduce your anger, reduce the effectiveness of harsh words, and make you to express your anger politely. You should release your anger in some way. Otherwise it will destroy your health. So, if you cannot restrict your anger, try to release your anger either by kicking a punching bag or shouting aloud at the top of your voice in a place where no one can hear you. You can express your anger by writing your feelings in a paper.

If the above tips do not help you in managing your anger, then you may need some professional help, either from a therapist specialized in anger management or from a psychiatrist.

Loneliness is the distressing feeling of isolation leading to a desire for company. Fear of being alone is the foremost cause of anxiety as we grow old. Loneliness is very common among older people. Loneliness is the major worry among most of the older people. A survey reports that young adults in the age groups of 20s report more pain, distress, and loneliness than all other age groups. Loneliness is very much painful and disturbing for people of all age groups from child to older people.

Researches have even reported that loneliness leads to depression, anxiety, and anger, as well as increases the vulnerability to physical health problems. Some studies even say that people who feel lonely or isolated may have a harder time to get a good sleep at night. It is found that the people who are lonely work more regularly during the night than those who are socially fulfilled. Scientific studies even say that loneliness speeds aging.

Though loneliness is not the only cause for depression, loneliness increases the risks of depression and other mental and physical problems. It is well known that depression adversely affects physical as well as general health of a person. Depression leads to poor sleep, hormonal changes, tension, anxiety, feelings of extreme sadness or guiltiness, poor concentration, loss of appetite or overeating, energy loss, chronic fatigue, and suicidal thoughts.

Loneliness may lead to lack of social and mental exercises, in turn leading to negative influence over health and longevity. Loneliness and social isolation impacts our health in ways comparable to the effects of high blood pressure, lack of exercise, obesity and smoking. In fact, a person’s progress and growth is affected by loneliness. A lonely person could be bored or frustrated due to lack of things to do or people to talk to. Though loneliness is not harmful, it is marked by deep feelings of isolation. Loneliness and lack of contact with friends and family is a greater worry that may even serve as a cause for declining health or finances. Loneliness may result in sleep disturbances and high blood pressure, thus increasing the risk for heart disease. The health impacts associated with loneliness are higher blood pressure, weakened immune function and increased stress hormones. The chronic feelings of loneliness can force a cascade of physiological events that may accelerate the aging process.

With all the above adverse effects of loneliness, it is always better to avoid loneliness. Developing new relationships can help relieve loneliness. Older people can form a social group to help prevent and treat loneliness and related problems. You can participate in variety of activities and entertainments. This way you can avoid being lonely and prevent the negative effects of loneliness, thus leading to a healthy and long life. A healthy mix of enjoyable company and productive time alone can help any person to grow with a sense of balance and self-control. Social interaction is one of the best ways to improve your mood, sense of well-being and general health.

If you are unable to avoid loneliness, you may at least need some sort of relaxation to find a lifestyle that pay no heed to the feeling of isolation while upholding the other important dimensions of your life. Self-realization and self-awareness make loneliness impossible. If you think loneliness may be the cause of your weariness, share your feelings with your friend, family, or a counselor.

From the ancient times, the mentally disturbed people have been viewed with a mixture of fear and dislike. Their fate is generally rejection, neglect, or ill treatment. People with mental health problems are treated in hospitals by community mental health specialists, including nurses, counselors and social workers. People suffering mental health problems are in need of access by community services such as mental health services. The welfare needs of the mentally ill people are the responsibility of the Department of Social Services or health services. Mental health services are there for treating and caring for mentally disturbed persons and for encouraging mental hygiene.

Mental health services provides assistance in meeting basic needs such as housing, employment, education, social services, transportation, and medical and nursing care for persons with mental illness. They assist persons with mental illnesses who are homeless in obtaining treatment and other services while making the transition from homelessness. With growing urgency, mental health services seek to promote mental health and to educate the public to pursue conditions conducive to individual growth and peaceful development. Community mental-health services were placed under the jurisdiction of local health authorities working in close association with hospital and outpatient centers.

The majority of people who suffer from mental illness receive excellent treatment through mental health services. In fact, they help them recover better. Mental health service organizes major mental health events each year. Mental health service organizations helps in maintaining mental health and preventing the development of psychosis, neurosis, or other mental disorders.

The mental health services aims in providing good mental health. The main activities of the mental health services and mental health organizations are rehabilitation of the mentally disturbed, prevention of mental disorder, reduction of tension in a stressful world, attainment of a state of well-being in which the individual functions at a level reliable with his or her mental potential, encouraging mental hygiene to promote and to preserve mental health, and promoting community mental health.

Government shares its mental-health function with religious groups or with other nongovernmental agencies. In US, the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) makes efforts to improve prevention and mental health treatment services for all Americans. It helps in improving and increasing the quality and range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for people with mental health problems, their families, and communities. It administers programs that focus on prevention, education, and delivery of quality mental health services for persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families, partners, and health care providers. It supports programs for people who are at-risk for mental illness and lack mental health services.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the major funding resource in the United States for basic and applied research in mental health and in the behavioral sciences, for demonstration projects, and for the training of mental-health professionals. NIMH has developed special programs in a broad range of social problem areas, from drug addiction to suicide prevention. Many innovative mental-health services initiated in Europe includes the concept of integrated community services, the use of tranquillizing drugs, the sheltered workshop, and the employment of nonprofessional workers in positions of responsibility. The World Federation for Mental Health federation organizes international study groups and expert committees, and regional and international meetings in order to develop close contacts with mental-health workers worldwide.

Many people are unaware of the Medical Information Bureau (MIB). The Medical Information Bureau is actually a central database of medical information. Any insurance claim that is filed by you or on your behalf can be reported to the Medical Information Bureau. The main intention behind the Medical Information Bureau is to provide background information to its insurance company members.

The Medical Information Bureau collects information of people who have applied for individual health or life insurance policies. The Medical Information Bureau provides the necessary information needs of most health and life insurance companies in North America that seek health, credit and other information about the people who request to be insured. In fact the Medical Information Bureau helps in detecting and preventing fraud that may occur while obtaining life, health, critical illness, disability income, and long-term care insurance. It also helps in lowering premiums to insurance-buying consumers.

The Medical Information Bureau collects information such as credit information; medical conditions, medical tests and results; habits such as smoking, over-eating, gambling, drugs; hazardous avocations and hobbies; and motor vehicle reports such as poor driving history and accidents. The information collected by the Medical Information Bureau is saved on file for seven years. The files maintained by the Medical Information Bureau do not include your complete medical records, but contain only codes signifying certain health conditions. The information in MIB recorded as codes for specific medical conditions and lifestyle choices. The medical conditions include High blood pressure, Asthma, Diabetes, Depression, Participation in high-risk sports such as skydiving, smoking, etc.

Many insurance companies use the services of the Medical Information Bureau. The information collected by the Medical Information Bureau helps the insurance companies decide the candidates who are likely to live long enough so that the company makes profit. The insurance companies use the information from the Medical Information Bureau to check up before they issue life, health or disability policies. Thus they help the insurance company to determine whom to accept for insurance and whom to reject.

The employees or members of Medical Information Bureau can access your personal information only after getting your signature. But employers, vendors, and non-members do not have access to the MIB files. You have access to your MIB report once in each year at no cost to you. You can request online or make a call to the MIB.

The service of the medical information bureau is important to patients. The patients must be aware that the medical information bureau exists to easily obtain the insurance they may wish to acquire. Plan to obtain any MIB records currently available on the MIB file, if you have the idea of purchasing any form of life, disability, long-term or other health-related insurance within the next few years.

The Medical Information Bureau is a consumer reporting agency subject to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). It sets a national standard of privacy of health information. If you are denied insurance based on an MIB report, you have certain rights under the FCRA to correct the erroneous MIB information.

The Medical Information Bureau follows the philosophy that every consumer should be permitted to know the contents of his or her record maintained by the Medical Information Bureau, and that the consumers has the right to correct any inaccurate or incomplete information in the record. This is advantageous to both the consumers and the MIB by assuring that the MIB record information is as truthful as possible.

Mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness, but it also the ability to cope with the challenges in life. Mental health is as important as physical health to everybody. Youths usually experiment with attitudes, appearances, and behaviors. Most of their experiments are harmless, but some experiments may have terrible results. Children and youths experience mental health problem such as stress, anxiety, harassment, family problems, depression, learning disability, etc. Serious mental health problems, such as self-injurious behaviors and suicide, are increasing among youth.

A good mental health is essential for leading a good life. Youth cannot succeed in academic and personal life effectively if they are struggling with a mental health problem, such as depression or unsteady feeling due to academic, social or family pressures.

Failure to detect youth’s mental health problem may result in negative consequences such as increased risk for academic failure, social isolation, unsafe sexual behavior, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide attempt, unemployment, and poor health. A recent report says, “The rising rates of mental and emotional problems among U.S. children and youngsters signal a crisis for the country. Depression, anxiety, attention deficit, conduct disorders, suicidal thinking, and other serious psychological problems are striking more and more children and youths. Conservative estimates say one in every ten children and adolescents now suffers from mental illness severe enough to cause impairment.” Even if detected earlier, unfortunately many children and youth do not receive the help they need. Some reports are there that most children and youth who need a mental health evaluation do not receive services and that the rates of use of mental health services are also low.

Parents and adults must take care of the youth’s mental health. The parents and adults must talk with the youth, be a good role models to them, advice them to choose good friends, and monitor their activities.

There is a growing and unmet need for mental health services for children and youth. Mental health services are important for student’s and youth’s success. Prevention programs help in early identification of mental health problems in youth. These programs provide education on mental health issues, violence prevention, social skills training, harassment prevention, suicide prevention, conflict resolution, and screening for emotional and behavioral problems. The Family Guide Web sites are designed for parents and other adults to emphasize the importance of family, promote mental health, and help prevent underage use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs.

Good mental health is very important for youth’s success. In order to emphasize the importance of mental health in youth, the following steps can be taken: Create awareness of child and youth mental health issues; provide a comprehensive guide for effective and meaningful youth meetings for organizations and professionals; and Conduct programs to generate awareness about youth’s mental health in each communities. Awareness about the importance of mental health issues among youth equally important to other physical issues, such as heart disease, AIDS, cancer, etc. Local and state health officials must draw more attention to the importance of mental health treatment of affected children and youths.

Attention to youth’s mental health will more effectively improve their life standard. This also positively impacts their academic and personal life achievements. The families, society and youths benefit only when mental health problems in youths are identified and prevented earlier.
